Tips About Fur
Warmth
Fur is nature’s most beautiful response to winter. As a natural material, fur allows the body to breathe and is isothermal, which means it will keep your body comfortable and cozy.
Comfort
Soft and sensual, nothing compares to the feel of fur. With today’s new techniques, furs have never been more lightweight and versatile. In fact, many furs can be worn year round, rather than just in the cold months.
Fashion
Hundreds of top international designers showcase fur in their collections for its unique, luxurious look and feel.
Versatility
The cliché of fur being only for formal occasions has long been put to rest. Fur now can be worn everywhere - with jeans, gowns, etc.
Durability
Despite its luxurious look and feel, fur is a natural fabric and is naturally durable. By taking care of your fur, your investment will bring you many years of pleasure.
Eco-logical
Fur is a natural material, as well as, a renewable resource. The fur trade is strictly regulated to ensure that endangered species are never harmed. The trade also works closely with government and veterinary authorities to ensure humane standards both nationally and internationally.
Characteristics of Fur
Shearling
Shearling is a natural lamb pelt, which consists of two sides. The first side consists of leather or suede and the other consists of the fur. The fibers of Shearling tend to either wick away moisture or retain moisture, depending on humidity, and thus, a garment or item made from theses fibers tends to be comfortable year round.
Mouton
Mouton is French for "sheep". Mouton comes from lamb pelts that are sheared closely for a soft, thick, and flat fur. The majority of our hats are made from mouton pelts, which are imported from Spain.
Mink
Mink is still the most popular fur due to its softness. Mink is made up of lightweight, lustrous guard hair along with dense, soft under fur. Primarily farm-raised, mink is available in a wide variety of natural colors, but it is often dyed due to its tremendous durability.
Rabbit
Rabbit generally has mid-length guard hair in a variety of natural colors and is often sheared (trimmed). While not the most durable, this is a very reasonably priced fur and is enjoying increasing popularity as designers use it to create trims, accessories, as well as, fun and casual garments. Rex Rabbit is the most desirable because it does not have a tendency to shed.
Raccoon
Long gray/black guard hair with silvery tips over a woolly, dense under fur makes North American raccoon a very versatile and durable fur. Finn raccoon is farmed in Europe and has long, thick tan guard hair with black tips and dense under fur.
Fox
Fox is available in the widest range of natural colors of any fur, apart from mink. With its distinctive dying capability and various dying techniques, the sky is the limit. Very long, lustrous guard hair with a thick, soft under fur make fox ideal for adding a touch of glamour to collars, cuffs, wraps and stoles. Surell Accessories generally uses fox imported from Norway, Sweden or Denmark.
Fur Knits
Knittable yarn is now produced by combining narrow strips of fur with silk or cotton yarn; fur yarn is now used in myriad techniques including crocheting, weaving, and knitting to produce soft, cozy apparel and accessories.
